After considering both sources and your knowledge of the term diversity, how are the issues of biodiversity related to the idea of threats to cultural diversity. Do you believe that governing bodies (country governments) should be actively involved (through legislation and funding) in protecting cultural diversity?
Diversity is an extremely important concept to understand. In order to make advancements to society and our way of life, we need to have a solid grasp on the important issues regarding diversity and lack thereof. I think diversity is having a vast numbers of differing forms of life, ideas, races, and cultures. Diversity is the broad umbrella that encompasses biodiversity, which is having various forms of life existing in a certain part of the world or ecosystem. Biodiversity can then be narrowed down to only look at humans in a specific area. That would be called cultural diversity. Cultural diversity is having many differing ideas and overall ways of living. Language loss is an aspect of biodiversity that is extremely detrimental to cultural diversity. In the TED talk, Wade Davis mentioned that every 2 weeks, an elder dies, carrying with them the last remaining syllables of an ancient language. The loss of language shows that cultural diversity in the world is declining, because it is such a major part of our culture, being a main way that humans communicate with one another.
When it comes to preserving biodiversity around the world, I think that government and legislation are extremely important. Government and policy makers have the power to implement laws and regulations regarding practices that damage the environment and threaten biodiversity. However, even more important than legislation, is knowledge of the people. It’s extremely important to educate people of the dangers that humans are to the earth. If everyone is sufficiently educated and doing their individual part to encourage and preserve the biodiversity of the planet, then legislation isn’t necessary in the first place.
“And in the end, then, it really comes down to a choice: do we want to live in a monochromatic world of monotony or do we want to embrace a polychromatic world of diversity?” (Davis, 2003). When it comes down to it, biodiversity is a detail that often gets overlooked by the general public. However, people do understand how important it is. Because who really wants to live in a world where there are only a few different animals and plants around? I know I don’t. Nature is beautiful, and as humans, we have a responsibility—with or without the government’s help—to keep all forms of life alive and healthy. Too many species are extinct because of the ignorant and careless actions of humans, and if they continue, our world will become bland and monotonous.
